Say cheese!
I get a lot of compliments regarding my smile. In fact, just this past weekend, I was complimented on how white my teeth looked in person and online. I think genetics have a part to play in this as well as how I care for my teeth. Although, I don’t believe I have found the fountain of youth when it comes to having pearly whites, I do follow my dental care routine religiously.
Since many of you asked me to share my tips and today is World Oral Health Day, here is my dentist-approved oral health routine. My dentist would be proud!
1. Go to the dentist
I don’t like going to the dentist like most people but I know the importance of making it a habit anyway if I want to have a healthy smile. I go every six months and have done so since childhood. Every time I sit in that dreadful chair, I get a full dental exam as well as a cleaning. If my dentist notices an issue, I make sure it is corrected right away. I don’t wait until I am in pain to go to address it, I invest in prevention instead. When it is time to book my next appointment, the dentist office calls me so I don’t have to think about it.
2. Floss
At-home dental care is crucial if you want to have a white smile. This might seem basic but flossing after each meal will do wonders for your teeth. Think about it, as you eat food can lodge itself in between your teeth and create a breeding ground for bacteria. This can lead to cavities, plaque and tartar which will keep your teeth from looking their best.
3. Brush
If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen my unboxing Insta Story of the Goby Electric Toothbrush. It is during this unboxing that some of you asked me to share my tips for a white smile. Up until this weekend, I have been brushing my teeth with a manual toothbrush but decided to give this sleek electrical tool a try.
The Goby Electric Toothbrush comes in a variety of colors like black, pink and blue. It is made with soft bristles which is ideal for gum health. There is only one button on the handy device to turn it on, off and alternate between modes. It is designed to clean your teeth in 4 quadrants and beeps when it is time to move to another section.
When I first opened the box, I was impressed by how sleek, modern and elegant the Goby Electric Toothbrush looked. I also appreciated how simple it was to assemble with its compact stand and magnetic charger. It was a breeze to use and gave my teeth and tongue a thorough clean.
I’ve used both manual and electric toothbrushes in the past. I can honestly say that electric toothbrushes have always given me a better clean than manual ones. I don’t have a specific reason as to why I went back to a manual toothbrush. Truth be told, I either got a new toothbrush from my dentist’s office and started using it or I forgot to get replacement brush heads for my electric toothbrush and had a manual toothbrush on hand and the rest is history. I know this is not my proudest moment but it is an honest one which goes to show that you can achieve a white smile with a manual toothbrush too. As of now, the Goby Electric Toothbrush comes with a subscription so new brush heads will be delivered to my door.
4. Wear lipstick
Did you know that your lipstick choices can affect the appearance of your teeth? It’s true! Lipstick can make your teeth appear whiter or yellower depending on its base. To remedy this, choose blue-based lipsticks instead of yellow-based lipsticks. That subtle variation in hue will make a big difference. Look for shades of red, pink and even purple that have a cool undertone (blue-based) instead of a warm undertone (yellow-based). If you can’t tell the difference between the two, test each of your lipsticks on yourself. If a shade makes your teeth look yellower it probably has a warm undertone but if it makes them look whiter you have a winner!
5. Be joyful
Another key to having a beautiful smile is for it to be genuine. A smile that comes from a happy heart can illuminate any room even if it is less than perfect. It warms the heart and that is what makes it attractive. I believe people can feel that I genuinely love to laugh and connect to the warmth in my smiles which help make it more beautiful.
