Let’s face it, we’re pretty wasteful people and we commit quite a few crimes of fashion as well. Our victim? Our own home: the earth. What a paradox. And contrary to popular belief, we are at least as much if not more responsible for the earth’s demise as the corporations environmentalists point their finger at.
As consumers we can make more conscious choices when purchasing, caring for and disposing of our stuff. Here are 7 really simple ways you can make fashion more sustainable:
#1 Use colder water to wash your clothes and hang them on a line to dry when possible.
#2 Skip the trash! Recycle your clothes by donating them or reselling them.
#3 Repurpose your old clothes by using them in DIY projects.
Per example you can turn an old pair of jeans into ripped jeans shorts. You can also turn an old scarf into cool artwork for your wall by stretching it inside of a frame.
#4 Invest in higher quality items with longer staying power.
#5 Repair your things when they fall apart instead of tossing them.
#6 Know where your stuff comes from. Opt for eco-friendly and green items when possible.
#7 Make your own clothes. Pick up sewing as a new hobby, it’s a lot of fun! Trust me, I know.
