Bangladesh and garment factory disasters have become synonymous over the past 12 months. Last spring, a factory fire made headlines putting Bangladesh’s garment industry labor policies at the forefront but the interest quickly faded.
This week, tragedy hit the impoverished country again when an eight story garment building, Rana Plaza, came crumbling down. According to the New York Times cracks were discovered in the structure on Tuesday but workers were still instructed to attend work yesterday when the tragedy occurred. They were told that they would not get paid if they made it to work later than 8 a.m. that morning.
As of April 26, 238 people have been pronounced dead and more than 1000 people are still unaccounted for.
The Children’s Place, Joe Fresh and Cato are among the clients of the collapsed factories.
