Mother nature has been taking us for a wild ride lately, which is a sure sign that spring is on its way. With that we cannot wait to ditch our boots for cute flats and killer heels. But before you start spring shopping F.W.A.C. suggests you figure out what you already have and what you need. The best way to do that is: drum roll spring-cleaning! We already know what you are thinking: ugh, I hate spring cleaning. But we can’t stress enough how important it is. To make it easier on you, we pulled together our best spring-cleaning tips. If you follow these simple steps, we promise to make this process fun and virtually painless.
To do this you will need:
– 2 of your most trustworthy girlfriends,
– your favorite drinks, make sure you also drink plenty of water to stay hydrated,
– sweets like cookies and chocolate but don’t get any on the clothes,
– a digital or Polaroid camera,
– a charity of choice.
Before you begin you and your friends must take the Spring-Cleaning Pledge:
I (your name) promise to look at this closet with the eyes of an editor. I promise to discard all the things that are out of style, in poor condition or not a perfect fit. I will not eat sweets and touch the clothes and promise to be brutally honest with finesse.
Now, you are truly ready to begin. First, empty out your closet and dump everything on your bed. Second, you must try EVERYTHING on. If something is too small, no matter how much you love it and believe that one day you will be able to fit in it, you must get rid of it! Keeping clothes that are too small for you is a constant reminder that you are unhappy with your figure. Contrary to popular belief it is not motivation, it is absolute torture and nobody needs it! If something is too big, definitely get rid of it. No fat pants should be allowed in your closet. Allow your friends to judge whether your clothes are flattering or not. Getting a second opinion is invaluable to the success of this process. You should only keep fabulous things, in immaculate condition that fit you like a glove. Everything else should be donated to your favorite charity. Make sure that each item is like new and clean. Giving clothing that is visibly damaged, worn or dirty to charity is extremely tacky and disrespectful, so don’t do it! Donating is a great way to help your community, liberate space for you and get a tax write off!
Now you are ready to move on to organizing. At this point make sure you lock all the exits because your friends will try to run. This is a crucial step and you will need all the help you can get.
First, you want to organize your clothing seasonally. If space is an issue, get a small storage unit and rotate your clothing according to the season. Next, color coordinate each garment category so that if you are looking for a red top you just direct your steps to the red section and voila! Keep in mind that sweaters should never be hung but should always be folded.
As for your shoes, we recommend you purchase clear storage boxes for each pair. For easy access, take a picture of one shoe per pair and stick it to the front of the box. This way you will know where each pair is at a quick glance. If you don’t want to invest in storage boxes you can also, like I do, use the box the shoes came in.
And you are done! Now you have room to breathe and get even more fabulous things.
