Happy Martin Luther King Day everyone! For some of you today is just a regular Monday or a day off while for most it is a bittersweet day. A day when we remember how much people of color have suffered in America over the years, the peaceful battles they had to fight and the great lives that were lost like MLK’s in 1968. And although Dr. King’s birthday is a national holiday few people truly understand the implications of what he did.
To commemorate this day and celebrate his legacy, here are 10 of my favorite MLK quotes.
1. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
2. “I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.”
3. “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”
4. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
5. “Almost always the creative dedicated minority has made the world better.”
6. “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?'”
7. “We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.”
8. “The quality, not the longevity, of one’s life is what is important.”
9. “The time is always right to do what is right.”
10. “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

We’ve come a long way but we have more ways to go.
