Hello loves,
As you may or may not know transitioning from relaxed to natural hair can be very confusing, and time-consuming if you don’t know what you are doing. I’ve had to go through this process many years ago and it is a journey. So to help all my transitioning ladies get through the summer, I asked my friend, Toronto based hairstylist Keina Morgan to give you 5 easy summer tips to help you along.
Let’s get right into it!
1. THE NOT SO BIG SHOP
Grow out your relaxer to a comfortable length by doing protective styling before cutting the last bit of relaxer off. This will help create a style and shape in your hair once you’ve grown it out.
2. STRENGTHEN DAMAGED HAIR WITH DIY TREATMENTS
Invest in a hooded dryer and or heat treatment cap. This will help give your treatments deep moisture penetration. Try mixing up some avocado, plain yogurt, coconut oil, jojoba oil, banana and a little bit of your favorite store-bought conditioner for great at home treatment.
3. TRIM YOUR ENDS TO PREVENT SNAGGING
What’s the point of trimming my hair if I want to grow it, you ask? Trimming has a major effect on healthy hair growth. Having perfectly trimmed ends helps prevent snagging, ripping and tearing while you style and detangle your hair.
4. USE SAGE OIL TO PREVENT SPLITTING ENDS
The majority of splitting hair comes from heat damage. A great way to soothe this condition is to use sage oil. It should be mixed with a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil, coconut oil, olive oil or jojoba oil to only name these few.
5. STYLING: TRY BANTU KNOTS
These single hair rolls (or twists) are formally known as chiney bumps. They are a great way to style your hair in its transitional stage while it grows out, while giving you awesome definition. I suggest using a butter for styling up this look.
