To wear or not to wear? That is the question!
Every season, the who’s who of fashion take the streets in their best and most curated looks with a “I woke up like this” vibe.
This season, I created my looks around one singular idea: shopping my closet! This might sound boring to some but challenging myself to style brand new fashion-week-worthy ensembles without shopping for anything new was exciting. I don’t consider myself to be a minimalist per se but I do believe in avoiding excess. I have been shopping my closet and reinventing looks for years. The things I uncover in my own wardrobe will never cease to amaze me! To make things even more interesting I limited myself to one pair of black suede booties.
As most fashion lovers, I’ve fallen victim to the “I don’t like this piece anymore”, only to frantically look for that same piece a few months later because for some reason that I can’t explain I HAVE TO HAVE IT! Since this has happened to me more times than I plan to disclose here, I now, think long and hard before discarding anything. To avoid hoarding, I intentionally only shop for new must-haves and needs, not wants. At the end of the day, I only have one body to dress!
My New York Fashion Week was shortened this year because of travel. I attended events on 3 days. Here is what I wore.
Day 1 | Wakanda Forever
On day 1, I wore a delicate white shirt with scalloped details by Anna Sui under Mayamiko’s Gaia playsuit. One of the events I attended that day was the Black Panther: Welcome to Wakanda NYFW event hosted by Marvel Studios. To represent the Motherland well, I wanted to wear threads made in Africa and I did. The Gaia playsuit was made in Malawi and embodied the traditional-meets-modern sensibility I was looking for.
Day 2 | You can sit with us
On day 2, I paired plaid pants that I designed with Gifted Apparel’s IDK IDC t-shirt in red and vintage coat. I accessorized with my mom’s vintage sunglasses and a suede oversized clutch / crossbody bag. I also wore red because it was Valentine’s Day. Obvi!
Day 3 | La Finale
On day 3, I wore an Anna Sui faux fur leopard print jacket with a paisley print shirt from my mother’s closet, a burnt orange lightweight jacket and black leggings. I belted the shirt and lightweight jacket to add structure to the loose pieces and restore my body shape.
