“Head wraps and turbans date back to pre-colonial African history in sub-Saharan Africa. They were considered symbols of status, marriage, and family lineage. During the Transatlantic Slave Trade, they were one of the few cultural pieces enslaved Africans were able to bring to the Americas. They were later used as a means of oppression by forcing women of color to cover their hair (by law). Today, we’re reclaiming and celebrating them!”
