I am a big fan of at home beauty regimens such as mini facials, waxing, manicures and pedicures. They are easy to do if you have the right tools and can save you a considerable amount of money in the long run. But I wasn’t always a D.I.Y. advocate because let’s face it, we all love to be taken care of and pampered. And there is nothing wrong with that. However, if you choose to entrust your beauty to the quote unquote experts there is something you should know: beauty services can make you very sick!
Let’s start with manicures and pedicures.
Did you know? The UV lights used to dry your nails may cause cancer on the back of your hands and give you unwanted age spots?
Solution:Â Ask for the UV rays to be turned off and only the fan kept on to dry your nails.
Did you know? The tools used for your mani/pedi are not always cleaned properly and can transmit all kinds of diseases?
Solution:Â Invest in your own set of tools and bring them with you every time you get a manicure or pedicure.
Did you know? The bubbly foot bath that feels so good in between your toes is actually an incubator for bacteria. When the bubbly soak is activated some of the dirty water from the previous customer rises up from the drain and mixes itself into your clean water. Disgusting right?
Solution:Â Avoid the bubbly soak no matter how good it feels. Instead use a still soak and favor a spa which uses disposable plastic foot baths. This way the dirty water cannot find its way into your clean soak.
How about your monthly haircut?
Did you know? You can get ringworm from a dirty hair brush?
Solution: Make sure your hairstylist disinfects his tools in barbicide. Beware, barbicide should be dark blue. Some hairstylist use windex which is light blue instead of the real stuff because it’s cheaper.
Last but not least, waxing. Now, it really get nasty.
Did you know? Double dipping is a dangerous health hazard, especially when getting your bikini waxed? Most spas don’t change their bikini wax as often as they should. And if they double dip, the wax becomes an apparatus for bacteria and STDs can be passed on.
Solution: Find a waxing professional you really trust and who never double dips. If the spa offers no double dipping as an option, RUN!!!! Only frequent spas who have a strict NO DOUBLE DIPPING policy for all customers.
Now that you have all the facts, go on be pretty and stay healthy.
Love always.
